Greece, Electoral Rolls and Male Registers, 1856-1950
1,408,633 sissekannet
This collection includes the election material of the Vlachogiannis Collection of the General State Archives of Greece. The collection consists of voter lists from 56 regions of Greece, and two male registers from another two regions. Most of the material covers the decades of 1860, 1870 and 1880, while the voter lists of Athens include records from the 1920s. The voter lists are sorted by province (επαρχία), municipality (δήμος) and town/village. Voter lists generally include: the voter’s given name and surname, father’s name, age and occupation.

In 1844, the Greek Constitution was passed and elections were held to create the first parliament. Registers were kept of the names and ages of men over the age of 25, who were eligible to vote. After 1864, the eligible voters’ age was reduced to 21 years old. Though created for military and not voting reasons, male registers include the same information as voter lists, except that they do not mention the individual’s occupations. We recognize and thank Greg Kontos for his invaluable contributions to the publication of this collection.
