Sjömanshus existed in several Swedish cities for several hundred years and their activities were aimed at collecting information about Swedish seamen and Swedish merchant ships. Another purpose of this organization was to set up houses for retired and injured seamen and their families so that they could receive benefits. Every seaman had to be registered at a seamen's house, usually within the district where he was registered under the church. This collection contains two types of records, enrollment registers (Tjänstematrikel) and enlistment ledgers (Mönstringsliggare).

The records in this collection are © Riksarkivet (The National Archives).
